“Safe harbor” administration is authorized to state:
First Danube herring fishes have entered into the Danube!!!
It was ever thus and it will be! For more than three hundred years since the city foundation this is the most desired and glad news for Vylkove citizens.
Say the least of it, this is European importance news.
The Danube herring may be caught only in Europe, in the lower part of the Danube and only in spring. In fact, fish called “Danube herring” (as locals call Dunayka), exists in nature only for two-three months, during spawning season of Black Sea shad in the lower Danube. Spawned-out Danube herring becomes Black Sea shad again. However, importance of this fish consists not in its deficit but in its exceptional tastiness.
We know that Roman patricians were gourmands, they liked to eat specialities washed down with watered wine. Different tasty food was brought to Rome from every corner of the world, and it seems, from the Danube too. The historical information hereof has been preserved.
The Roman statesmen of Caesar’s age protecting economic interests of Roman Empire fishermen complained about goods of foreign make brought to Rome by merchants from The Ister (ancient name of the Danube) such as salted fish, costing 300 drachms for one barrel.
The Danube herring was exported as speciality not only to ancient Rome, but at all times also to other European countries. But! But only in spring! In other seasons Danube herring is not caught. It is away from the Danube.
Every year gourmands, experts in Danube herring taste are waiting for spring with gourmet impatience. Spring means fried, boiled herring, Dunayka fish broth, salted herring…! It tastes good, delicious!
“Safe harbor” administration informs those who wish to visit Vylkove and taste dishes of live Danube herring: In 40 meters from the country-house is located a fisherman’s camp where fishermen come by boat to take out fish from nets. Here you can not only buy live Danube herring but also watch it being taken out from nets.
Live fish dishes differ from fresh fish dishes; as Odessites say, “Two totally different things”.
